How do I manage my time?
Recently while browsing in the non-fiction section of the library I came across this book "I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make The Most of Their Time" https://lnkd.in/gXfkXsjM
I borrowed it, read the first third while on a camping trip during kids naps, and then had to rush to return it so as to not incur late fines. I would love to complete this book one day, but from what I did read I gathered the point is that "We have more time in each day than we think". Well folks, I already figured this one out on my own.!*gives self a pat on the back*
That's exactly what I tell people when they find out that I have 3 kids, work full time, and I'm doing an MBA (full disclosure I'm on maternity leave right now). They ask how I do it and I always say, I have no choice. I just get it done.
You have more time in each day to do things you need to and want to do than you think. The next time you need to get something done, don't put it on the to do list for tomorrow if you can get it done today.
For those of you who might be curious, this is my schedule depending on what season of life I'm in.
Regular work days:
6 am - 8 am Mom shift 1
8 am - 5 pm Drive to work, working, drive home
5 pm - 8 pm Mom shift 2
8 pm - 10 pm MBA assignments and studying
Class days:
6 am - 8 am Mom shift
8 am - 5 pm Drive to work, working, drive to Haskayne School of Business
5 pm - 6:30 pm Assignments and studying
6:30 pm - 9:30 pm Class
9:30 pm - 10 pm Drive home
Weekends look like a lot of assignments, quizzes, and as much time with the kids as I can between cleaning the house and running errands. Now that I'm on maternity leave my time is much more flexible but we still have a rhythm based on things that need to be done.
Maternity leave:
6 am - 9 am Mom shift 1 (includes drop 2 older kids off at school)
9 am - 10:30 am Breakfast and laundry while kid # 3 naps
10:30 am - 11:30 am Walk
11:30 am - 1 pm Dishes, kid # 3 lunch, playtime
1 pm - 2:30 pm Me time 💥 aka contract work while kid # 3 naps
2:30 pm - 4 pm Grocery shopping/errands/prep dinner
4 pm - 5 pm Pick up older kids
5 pm - 8 pm Make dinner and family time
8 pm - 9:30 pm Clean up and prep lunches
9:30-11 pm Me time 💥 aka contract work, exercise, gardening, or relaxing
People may think that maternity/parental leave means that individuals are stepping away from work completely. That is far from the truth.
I'm leveling up my ability to get all the things done. Period.
